I honestly wonder whether President Obama sincerely feels this way behind closed doors. Regardless, he’s ensured himself another term as President of the United States of America. God only knows why he wants the responsibility to lead America out of its struggling economy. With more jobs sent overseas, a lost generation of college graduates without jobs, and an unfair tax code that rewards the rich and foreign expansion, Obama and America face a bleak future that may only get worse in 2012.

Until then, take 3 minutes and listen to what Obama really thinks about Osama Bin Laden and America’s future.

Okay, so you missed the fight. Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley was the one of the worst boxing matchups ever, but I’ll let you figure out who won. Shane Mosley. Play the video above to understand why “Sugar” Shane Mosley beat Manny Pacquiao.

Shane Mosley wins because of Bella Gonzalez, Mosely’s girlfriend, is bellissimo, “very beautiful,” if you didn’t speak Italian. Who cares if you don’t speak the Italian, she probably speaks great sex and made boxer, Shane “Money Man” Mosley, feel fine after the $5 million pay out.

Who needs to beat Manny Pacquiao at 40 years old anyway? It’s not like Mosley would have defended the legitimacy of a Pacquaio defeat against Floyd Mayweather Jr., who convincingly beat Mosley last year. However, Shane Mosley, did earn a moral victory by defending his record of never being knocked out in a fight.

Congratulations Mosley, you took your beat down like a man and maximized your earning potential by fighting 2 of the best boxers on the planet, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The best news is the fact that you’re banging out the baddest chick the in the boxing game, who actually loves you given her emotions while witnessing your beatdown.

A toast to Shane “$5 Million Dollar Man” Mosley, the true winner of the Pacquiao vs. Mosley boxing match. The only real loser in this fight was boxing. The UFC has officially received the torch given how often Mosley ran from Pacquiao the entire night. Though the UFC doesn’t market its matches in the same successful fashion as Don King did hay-days of boxing, mixed martial arts does ofter better fights for the buck.

No man can effectively take a dive without risking ridicule of the fans. Quite simply, there are too many fighters who want the top champion’s spot; thus, fighters must prepare to fight as if their careers depended on it. The truth is their career actually do depend on their last performance and no one gets a shot at a championship unless you bring it int he Octagon every fight. Unfortunately, boxing sold its soul to the devil, not Don King, but money alone. Say it with me, “I will never pay $70.00 for a pay-per-view boxing match, unless its Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.”

Until the only fight that matters is official,

Black Women Outpace Black Men in College Completions

According to the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, in each of the three years before the turn of the century from 1998 through 2000 there was a one percentage point decline in the overall graduation rate of black men. But for the past five years the graduation rate for black men has improved by one percentage point and now stands at 36 percent. Long-term, over the past 16 years, black men have improved their graduation rate from 28 percent to 36 percent.

This year the college graduation rate for black women rose by one percentage point to 47 percent. And over the past 16 years the graduation rates for black women have shown strong and steady gains. Turning in a powerful performance over the past 16 years, black women have improved their college completion rate from 34 percent in 1990 to 47 percent in 2006. So for black women, we appear to be very close to the point where one half of all students who enter a particular college will go on to earn their degree from that same institution. - www.jbhe.com

C’mon fellas. How can we as black men look our ladies in the eye on this one? It’s reasonable to expect that black women want to marry their match or beyond in terms of education, finances, or social stature. Though we’ve seen some progress over time, we still have some work to do before we can accuse African-American women of being too demanding.

As black men, we often shy away from credible criticism concerning our inability to access higher education. Some cite examples of their primary educational system having too many inexperienced or Caucasian female teachers, who often label us as behavior problems and send us to the back of the class, which limits learning, or God-forbid, “Alternative School,” an arguable precursor to prison.

In other instances, we suggest the lure of streets and its short-term wealth are too much to ignore. As black men living in a socioeconomically depressed community, we have no choice but to hustle and sell dope rather than invest 22 years in a suspect educational system comprised of apathetic teachers, out of date books, and dangerous temptations while walking (or running, depending on the neighborhood) to and from school.

Regardless, our black women are products of the same, struggling school systems; yet, they’ve found some way to motivate themselves to earn a college degree more often than we do. As black men, we owe it to them, our future families, but more importantly, ourselves to take advantage of what our ancestors lacked centuries before-access to higher education.

For those still interested in making excuses, I urge you to use what you have, do what you can, and pray to your God for what you cannot provide. I realize many black families are struggling to make ends meat, let alone pay for a college education. However, Black Blogopolis aims to host weekly webinars, provide online education, and a plethora of tips and techniques to multiply your knowledge and income. In time, you’ll likely become a richer man for it, both personally and financially, such that a college education will be well within your reach and its costs will be covered with confidence.

Until the next one,

I imagine the bulk of Black millionaires are over 30, probably early 40's, and embrace sports and golfing and tennis because they can't move like they used to.
Interesting. I normally pride myself on operating under the radar, but Dennis Kimbro, one of the two authors of Think and Grow Rich: A Black Choice, has figured me out…well almost. I imagine the bulk of Black millionaires are over 30, probably early 40′s, and embrace sports and golfing and tennis because they can’t move like they used to. Maybe they’re all family men and women, have or had positions of influence within a corporation, and left the hood so to speak; thus, subject to being under the influence of their Caucasian counterparts and suddenly love golf and tennis as sports.

I too, attend a local church at least twice weekly. Men’s bible study surely helps curb the usual, worldly temptations that power, prestige, and the ability to purchase property typically offer. I definitely slip in and out the back, low-key, and would rather have coworkers, family, and friends thinking I’m broke rather than affluent.

I hate to admit this, but Black folks can be a jealous, hateful bunch sometimes. I have family members that I haven’t seen in years talk trash behind my back, suggesting I’m living check to check because I don’t advertise my wealth in terms of clothing, cars, and jewelry. Image is not everything; stop watching BET videos.

In fact, I would argue that most millionaires are minimalists: financially, professionally, and personally. I genuinely embrace the concept of living lean because that’s how a millionaire runs his business, efficiently. Their checkbook and investment portfolio aren’t too far behind.Professionally, millionaires are often pretty good at calculating shortcuts. We’ll observe the business model and identify its cost driver and exploit it for success. Personally, it’s a lot cheaper to know someone that owns a yacht and condo in Maui, than owning it yourself-even if you’re a millionaire.

The Habits of African-American Millionaires (per Dr. Dennis Kimbrow, 3.5 years of data):

All surpassed SAT scores > 1000

Collegiate G.P.A. circa 2.9 (males) 3.4 (females)

At least 3.5 hours of physical activity per week

All earned at least a 100k/annually by 30

Appraised value of home valued at 300k or less (I bet nearly every American falls in the category!)

Attends church at 2x weekly

Attends a small church comprised of 2,500 people or less.

Get up at 5:30 and go retire by 11:00 p.m.

Most, modest, unassuming, and humble

Less than $10,000k in credit card debt

69% finished or attended college

One out of 5 Black millionaires were business majors.

Own 4 cars, one of which is a Lexus or Mercedes.

10-15% to charity (males) and 10-15% to church (females)

Men buy clothing off the rack, while women love the brands, St. John, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci

Average Black millionaire is 52 years of age

Normally created 18 businesses or money-making ideas that are not successful until 18th attempt

3.2% of Black millionaires file for bankruptcy

Suits are often not worth more that $400 retail

Car is usually 5 years old

Married for at least 20 years

Most are confirmed. I’m not a business major though, but have always been interested in business. I always thought a bachelors degree in business, or anything else besides a STEM coursework (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), would be too general and expendable in today’s struggling, competitive economy. I would only consider business in the form of an M.B.A. or 3 year joint M.B.A./.J.D. program.

Wow, 5:30 a.m.-11 p.m., not quite, but I’m a night owl and sleep when I have time. Sure, my car is about 5 years old, but it looks new. A $1,000 paint job would take care of any questions, but I’d rather let someone else drive off that depreciation and buy the vehicle at cost on a rainy day.

Not married, but why would I get married? Prenuptial agreements cost $20,000 and and barely enforceable, but the average weeding is $23,000. However, I’d be open to having a ceremony and honeymoon; I just don’t want to sign anything…lol. Who buys a stock (enter a marriage) that has a 50/50 chance of losing half its value within 5 years? Maybe when I’m 52…nah, I’ll pass.

Concerning credit card balances, it depends, I’ll borrow at 0% for 18 months (4% fee) an invest it hoping to make 100% over 12-18 months. Rinse, wash, and repeat until you reach your magical retirement number. For me, that’s a lot more than usual, due in part that a million dollars isn’t what is used to be.

Don’t get me wrong, golf, yoga, and lifting weights are great, but tennis? I love Serena and Venus too, but seriously, how many of us play tennis regularly? Hmm…I’d say none of us do, then again, I’m fortunate in that I’m a bit younger than most Black millionaires.

Buying clothes off the rack…check. Why? Because clothes don’t make me much money. I suppose if I was an attorney, financial consultant, or real estate professional by trade, I would think differently. Business meetings are the only exception, but how many people wear a $1,200 suit to a networking event? I can feel the hate as I walk through the door now. However, like cars and communication devices, items upon which African-Americans spend most of their disposable income, clothes are depreciating assets that quickly lose value after purchasing.

Expensive vehicles parked in a garage or nearby lot eat away at your bottom line in terms of costly insurance, gas, or the many upgrades you never use. I love that Lexus has a car, the LS 460, that can park itself, but should I drop another $10,000 for that feature. Nice clothes and expensive suits sort of hang in the closet, doing nothing, and immediately lose value upon wearing them in the local club: filled with smoke, soon to be spilled alcoholic drinks, and groupies that only want you because of your expensive gear.

“Oooh, who’s that? Girrrrl. Look at his watch-and did you see his car. He must be ballin’,” she says. Yes, the groupies, your future ex-wife awaits because those nice clothes and new car will cost you in the long run. The flesh is week bra and you will fall once she grinds you a few times and offers herself to you for the evening. Never mind the wear and tear to that Hugo Boss suit, you’ll drop $40-$60 for dry cleaning because you’re sure the red wine will wash right out. Avoid ‘groupie-grinding,’ as it’s the leading cause of divorce in this country. I suppose marriage is too if you think about it, 50/50 chance of success, but I digress.

When Dr. Kimbro mentions a Lexus and/or Mercedes as types of vehicles Black millionaire own, I was concerned. We own 4 cars, seriously? If it’s true, it must be related to media hype. If you’ve never had the pleasure of driving a 100k vehicle for awhile, trust me, the difference between a Mercedes sedan and Chysler 300 is negligible in terms of an $60,000 price difference. Let’s face it, you know that you’re not supposed to drive over 60 mph anyway and that both vehicles can reach that speed in less than 5 seconds.

Do you really expect to use all 8 horses in the engine in major traffic? I doubt it. Therefore, I urge you. No, I implore you…to not to purchase any vehicle over 20k. Mathematically, with respect to residual value, it doesn’t make millionaire-sense. Please observe the illustrations below:

According to thecarsala.com, the above graph best represents what happens after two years of car ownership. This graph was generated using an automobile residual value tool from cars.com. This particular chart is for a mix of American, Asian, and European mid-sized sedans, but the data trends look similar for almost any car type.

What we can glean from this information one should never buy a brand new vehicle. Purchase a car when it’s 2 years young and invest the money you would have spent on the car payment elsewhere (Rule of 72). Future posts on the Rule of 72 and How to Negotiate at a Car Dealership will come soon. Until then, I suppose you’re not going to listen to this advice, so I included a listing of the car models offer the best residual value.

I hate to live to up to a stereotype, but I listen hip-hop-still. Drake is one of my favorite lyricists at the moment and I thought he said it best when describing money in his hit “Successful,”

Ahh yeah Trey I fuckin’ feel ya…

They be starin’ at the money like it’s unfamiliar…

I get it-I live it to me there’s nothing realer…

just enough’ll solve your problems…

too much’ll kill you. —Drake

You should get it too, moderation in everything.

An anonymous, private investment banker’s observations of people who have, or those on their way to having, wealth:

1. They ignore advertising and shun the purchase of trendy items. The “must haves” for them are not gadgets and consumer trinkets but “net worth” and “investments.”

2. Whether innately, or as the result of study, they know the difference between income and principal. Your not understanding this distinction offers the real prospect of your being more or less poor all your life.

3. They are prepared to walk away from any deal not conforming to their terms. Sensing this, the other party almost always relents. If you are not careful, spending money can become an emotional event. When passion governs, it seldom governs wisely.

4. They see the end from the beginning. By this, I mean that they realize, 15 or 20 years from now, they will derive much more pleasure from seeing Ivy League university undergraduate and graduate degrees hanging on their children’s walls than they will derive from making an (emotional) purchase of a car or the taking of a trip to Honolulu and spending $2,000 a night to stay in the Aikane Suite of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. They’ll get to the Royal Hawaiian all right and in due time, but you will pay for it. See #5.

5. They are attentive to their surroundings and to the behavior of other people. They see the (almost always) bad habits of others and deploy their capital so as to profit from the reinforcement of those habits. They buy the stocks of companies selling tobacco, alcohol, consumer electronic gadgets and do-dads, entertainment, and luxury items and thus turn your income into their principal. See #2 above.

6. They buy the stocks of companies providing health care and medical devices to insure a future steam of profit from the day when the bad habits of others truly catches up with them.

7. By the time they are 40-50, they have or are well on their way to having strong balance sheets. Their wants are few. Why is this so? It is so because only people without money will struggle to pay for things they in fact do not need and cannot afford. The more you can afford something, the less willing you are to pay for it and, consequently, as the night follows the day, the better the deal you get on anything you do buy.

I close with another quotation I read on a fortune cookie: If you don’t change direction, you’re likely to get where you’re headed.

These observations will help at least some of you. The painful truth is that those are likely the ones who didn’t need to read them.

I love McDonald’s…for all the wrong reasons. Their cheeseburgers are cheap, but include gobs of saturated fat the human tongue loves. McDonald’s fries are the best because they taste great and satisfy my appetite; however, those extra carbohydrates result in extra weight, increasing my risk for heart attacks and strokes. Never mind excessive salt that raises my blood pressure, I’m sure I’ll run that off after consumer my super-size combo meal. And who can deny an extra-large drink of soda for a dollar? Not me. I would argue those 70-100 grams of sugar with an insane concentration of caffeine only make me more alert-at least until I come down off that caffeine high 15-30 minutes later. Anyway, who cares? The McDonald’s food selections are cheap, tasty, fulfilling, and prepared in less than 5 minutes.

Yet, I don’t love McDonald’s for its pay scale practices nor its workweek scheduling. According to an article written by the Associated Press, McDonald’s is reportedly hiring 50,000 new employees, increasing its service staff by 7 percent. The new workers will be offered a whopping $7.25 per hour to make the food Americans seem to love. Assuming a standard 40 hour work week, an average employee will earn $15,080 annually, which is hardly enough to support a growing family of 1 wife and child. More importantly, this annual salary can barely cover health insurance premiums, maximize 401k savings, or purchase a college education for your child.

However, the best benefit of the McDonald’s employee pay plan is the fact its average employee will be scheduled for only 18 hours weekly, not the standard 40 hours as expected. Why, you ask? Because Mickey D’s doesn’t have to pay for health insurance for part-time employees. In fact, by scheduling its new workforce just below the part-time health insurance hourly minimum, which is conveniently 20 hours weekly, McDonald’s minimizes its variable costs per employee, but maximizes its potential profit for McDonald’s shareholders-including its CEO, who clears 9 million in annual salary.

Gotta love capitalism. If case you haven’t realized yet, now would be a good time to grab your children and encourage them to consider careers and starting businesses in areas of science, technology, and engineering. I assert the gap between the affluent and America’s working class, which is predominately African-American, will only widen in the years to come. Therefore, find a mentor, study hard, and develop the habit of sustaining your yourself in this struggling economy. Else, you too could end up socioeconomically depressed, working 18 hours weekly, for 7.25 per hour at McDonald’s.

Until next time,

I have good news and not so good news. The good news is that Cam Newton, former Auburn NCAA football BCS Championship Quarterback, is currently ranked 1st to be drafted by NFL scout, Todd McShay, in the 2011 NFL draft. However, the not so good news is that NFL team owners, who are predominately Caucasian, are rumored to be hesitant to pick Newton because of his race as an African-American.

Despite social gains realized by Black Americans since the 1964 Civil Rights Movement, African-American NFL quarterbacks still suffer from subtle racist stereotypes. Black quarterbacks can only run the football, but not throw it with accuracy, think former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, Akeli Smith. Some suggest NFL quarterback prospect Cam Newton will end his career like JaMarcus Russell, who is considered lazy and an NFL Black quarterback that lacks a diligent work ethic.

Underlying the surface of the statistical successes of other Black NFL quarterbacks, lies concern about their true potential to win a superbowl. Because of Cam Newton’s authentic athletic ability, NFL commentators and its fans presume he, like a Michael Vick or Donovan McNabb, will fall short of leading a team toward an NFL Superbowl ring. Haters reason that Newton too, will be only be serviceable as a running quarterback, incapable of winning NFL football games with his arm and mind.

As a sidebar, allow me to reference Cam Newton’s long list of NCAA football accomplishments. Keep in mind, Newton accomplished these awards, records, and statistics while competing in the Southeastern NCAA football conference (SEC), arguably, the most competitive conference in NCAA football.

2010 Heisman Award Winner

2010 BCS Championship Quarterback

Led the Auburn University football team to an undefeated record of 13-0.

Led the nation in QB passing efficiency (188.2), an NCAA record.

Scored 20 touchdowns in 2010, which ranked him 2nd in the nation-as a QUARTERBACK

Newton only threw 1 interception for every 4.66 touchdown passes

Averaged 5.82 yards per carry when he ran the football.

Joined Tim Tebow, former Florida Heisman QB, as the only 2 players in NCAA history that passed and ran for 20 touchdowns each in the same season, another NCAA record.

Given Newton’s stat line, objectively, he is a certified, top 10 NFL prospect. The idea that Cam Newton is one-dimensional and offers his innate athletic ability, alone is a logical fallacy. I understand Cam Newton scored 20 times with his legs, but he also scored 20 times with his arm, which only suggests he’s ambidextrous in his aptitude to score with the football.

It is both inaccurate and unfair to label Cam Newton as an NFL prospect with limited upside potential. If anything, Newton will likely become a chameleon that can fit within any Pro-Style NFL offense. This kid has already proven that he can lead a team under duress in the most competitive conference in the NCAA, but more importantly, did not collapse under pressure when playing in the NCAA BCS Championship game .

All things considered, I would suggest that racism is not necessarily the cheif culprit and cause of Newton’s criticism. Instead, I suggest the NFL owners and its fanbase suffer from “Michael Jordan Syndrome.”

We all know Jordan is one of the most celebrated and accomplished NBA athletes the world have ever witnessed. However, Michael Jordan was often noted and admired for his offensive achievements rather than his defensive talents. Because gravity-defying dunks, breathtaking buzzer beaters, and lovely layups produced more ESPN highlights than any steal, block, or rebound he earned; Michael Jordan gained praise and popularity, principally, as an offensive juggernaut rather than a defensive force to be reckoned with.

So too, Cam Newton, along with most of African-American NFL quarterbacks, will often be hailed and affirmed for their athletic awareness rather than their passing prowess. Black quarterbacks must unfairly embrace the old adage, “Be extroidinary to be ordinary,” when it comes time to leading an NFL football team. Because so few of us are granted an opportunity to break the color line, courtesy of the “Rooney Rule“), or work beyond societal expectations stemming from intrinsic racism via Jim Crow, African-Americans as a group must get int he habit of doing more with less-financial, social, and professional resources. Regardless, I expect Cam Newton to not only live up to the hype, but also accomplish more than his critics expect upon asserting himself as the premiere NFL quarterback of the future.

Until the NFL players give up or NFL owners give in,

I used to love watching NBA Basketball, but it has turned into the NFL-The National Flopping League. I swear if I see another graduate from the Derek Fisher School of No Defense, I’m switching to hockey.

Now I hope it never get that bad, but players like Manu Ginobili, Kobe Bryant, and Paul Pierce are killing the game. I get that everyone wants to win, but have some self-respect about playing hard-nosed defense.

Then again, maybe it’s the referees who need training and discipline for bad calls. I’m willing to bet many of them were not high school, collegiate, or professional athletes at any point in their lives. Sure, I know the stars are supposed to get the benefit of the doubt, but when Carmelo gets called for a personal foul on offense when receiving the ball, NBA Commissioner, David Stern, should reevaluate the league and take notice.
